OFFICIAL NAME- Glycyrrhiza glabra
HEALTH BENEFITS- It is given in anaemic patients to increase Hb, severe
headache, nausea, vomitings, constipation. Very efficient in abdominal
disorders. Helps in relieving gas and hence relieve colic pain. Works as an
antacid, antiemetic. Also useful in tubercular patients in relieving cough and
sputum.
HOME REMEDY- Decoction of yastimadhu is used to wash hairs in case of
hairfall and premature greying. Its powder can be applied directly on wounds.
Its mask made in ghee is used to cure severe pain in wounds. Small piece
placed in the mouth reduces allergic cough.

OTHER NAME- It is also known as madhook, kalitak, madhuyashti, mulethi,
jethimadhu, athimadhuram, jethimadh etc.
FLAVOUR- Yastimadhu is sweet in rasa and after taste is also sweet.
CHEMISTRY- It contains glycyrrhizin as the main ingredient which is in the form
of gylcerazinic acid. This is 50 times much sweeter than sugar. Its yellowish
colour is due to glycoside isoliquiritin. It also contains steroid oestrogen and
glucose,sucrose,starch and asparagine.
