Heart failure, also known as congestive heart failure, is a chronic condition in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body’s demands. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including underlying heart conditions, lifestyle factors, and certain medications.

Causes:

  • Coronary artery disease: It is the most common cause of heart failure, in which the coronary arteries become narrowed and reduces the blood supply to the heart muscle.
  • High blood pressure: Uncontrolled hypertension can lead to heart failure by making the heart work harder to pump blood.
  • Diabetes: Diabetes increases the risk of heart disease, which can lead to heart failure.
  • Heart valve disease: Conditions like aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation can lead to heart failure.
  • Arrhythmias: Abnormal heart rhythms can weaken the heart muscle over time.
  • Cardiomyopathy: This is a disease of the heart muscle that can weaken the heart’s ability to pump blood.
  • Alcohol and drug abuse: Chronic alcohol consumption and drug abuse can damage the heart muscle and lead to heart failure.

Dosha:

In Ayurveda, heart disease is believed to be caused by an imbalance in the Pitta dosha, which governs the heart, liver, and spleen. Pitta imbalance can lead to inflammation and damage to the heart and blood vessels, leading to heart disease.

Symptoms:

The symptoms of heart failure can vary depending on the severity of the condition, but can include:

  • Shortness of breath, especially with exertion or lying down
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Persistent cough or wheezing
  • Decreased ability to exercise
  • Sudden weight gain
  • Loss of appetite or nausea
  • Confusion or impaired thinking
  • Chest pain or pressure

Without treatment

Precautions:

  • Quit smoking and avoid exposure to secondhand smoke.
  • Maintain a healthy weight and engage in regular physical activity.

  • Control high blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol levels through medication and lifestyle changes.
  • Avoid or limit alcohol consumption.
  • Manage stress through techniques like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing.
  • Follow your healthcare provider’s recommendations for medication and treatment.
  • Get regular check-ups and screenings for heart disease.
  • Avoid or limit exposure to air pollution and other environmental toxins.
  • Learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of heart failure and seek medical attention if you experience any of them.

According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally, with heart failure being a major contributor. It is estimated that by 2030, more than 23 million people worldwide will die from cardiovascular diseases. However, many cases of heart failure can be prevented or managed through lifestyle changes, medication, and timely medical interventions.
